Guitar legend Jimi Hendrix packed so much into so few years, leaping forward musically with each innovation. Hendrix expert John McDermott chronicles each of Jimi's revolutionary recording sessions, enlisting the help of Hendrix's friend and bandmate Billy Cox and sound engineer and photographer Eddie Kramer. This beautifully designed, illustrated volume also includes vivid new descriptions of every single live Hendrix concert from 1963 to 1970. Sarah Sutton - Library Journal McDermott (Jimi Hendrix: An Illustrated Experience; Jimi Hendrix Sessions: The Complete Studio Recording Sessions, 1963 1970) has produced yet another in-depth and thorough work on the life of legendary musician Jimi Hendrix, which takes a chronological approach to cataloging the singer's life. Cowritten with Eddie Kramer and Billy Cox, both of whom worked with Hendrix during his short musical career (from 1963 until his death in 1970), the book contains the authors' personal perspectives, which help bring the book to life. Included are excerpts of dialog from session recordings and candid interviews with those closest to Hendrix. These provide an insider's perspective on Hendrix's creative process and grueling schedule of performances and recording sessions. Entries are arranged in an almost diary-like fashion, making for a very readable book. An index of song and album titles is included, but the book lacks a subject index or an extensive table of contents, which may hinder readers seeking quick references (other than to song and albums). BOTTOM LINE Despite some shortcomings, this is an extremely browsable book that some readers will no doubt read cover to cover. Recommended for large public libraries and academic libraries that support a music curriculum. Sarah Sutton, Texas A&M Univ. Lib., Corpus Christi
