Three clever billy goats outwit a big ugly troll that lives under the bridge they must cross on their way up the mountain.Eleanor Heldrich - Children's LiteratureThe series of books called "Flip-up Fairy Tales" is almost too good to be true. They come in paperback and hardback. No author is credited for this series (probably because they are re-told stories), but the writer or writers should be recognized because the updated texts are a big part of their charm. In this book, as with all of them, the meat of the grand old tales is preserved, as well as the recognizable phrases such as, "Who's that trip-trapping on my bridge, roared the troll." New flavor and fresh humor is added with up-to-date, often surprising, and amusing additional bits that do not in any way change the stories. Take the opening sentence: "Once upon a time there were three Billy Goats, each called 'Gruff.'" Edgson has drawn three goats who appear both innocent and slightly dim-witted and a not-too-frightening troll hiding under the bridge. Never have flaps made a greater addition to a story; they are wisely used and carefully crafted. Children and adults alike will enjoy this lively little book. 2005, Child's Play, Ages 2 up.
