The past decade has seen tremendous growth and enrichment in nursing's theoretical work. This third edition has therefore been updated, revised, and expanded to cover the gamut of recent developments in theoretical thinking in nursing. This book presents a systematic framework that can be used to examine elements in the field of nursing and posits important concepts that have emerged in the field. The chapters help to enhance readers' understanding about how conceptualizations and theoretical statements are developed and refined in nursing while simultaneously offering a typology of conceptual domains that can be used to delineate theoretical elements essential to nursing. This third edition retains the previous typology of four domains: the domain of client, the client-nurse domain, the domain of practice, and the environment domain.

\ From The CriticsReviewer: Vicki Ann Moss, DNSc, MS, BSN, RN(University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)\ Description: This book emphasizes "the how to and what of theoretical analysis in nursing." Essential features of nursing concepts are discussed and several nursing theories are contrasted.\ Purpose: The purpose is to delineate and clarify the theoretical aspects of nursing due to the pluralistic nature of the profession. The author wants to "enhance understanding about how conceptualizations and theoretical statements are developed and defined in nursing."\ Audience: "The audience is primarily graduate students, but senior nursing students and other nursing professionals could also use the book as an introduction to theoretical terms and theoretical concepts. "\ Features: Chapters cover theoretical terminology, nursing epistemology, and a typology based on the fours domains of nursing; client domain, client/nurse domain, practice domain, and domain of environment. The final chapters discuss theory development in nursing and issues in theoretical development. \ Assessment: "This is a well-written, thought-provoking book on theoretical thinking and knowledge development in nursing. Varied and often conflicting views are presented for debate and discussion. It is a somewhat heavy read with its many philosophical and theoretical terms, but it is very readable and understandable at a graduate level.
