\ From The CriticsReviewer: James Michael Lindsay, MS, BS(University of South Alabama)\ Description: This is a handbook for librarians and others who must deal with copyright issues. The first edition was published in 1997. \ Purpose: It is designed to help librarians and other educators remain current on copyright issues and to provide practical advice on avoiding copyright infringement and protecting the right of fair use. It is needed because copyright holders and publishers vigorously defend their rights, thus content users must defend their rights as well. The book meets the authors' objectives.\ Audience: The authors indicate that they wrote the book for librarians or educators. It is most useful for professional librarians, but other educators can benefit, particularly from the material on distance education and electronic course reserves. Both authors are credible authorities on copyright law: one holds both JD and MLS degrees and, as a library science professor, teaches and lectures on the subject of copyright law, and the other holds an MLS and is a seasoned law librarian. \ Features: This work provides context for librarians and others who need to understand copyright by tracing the origins of copyright law, reviewing sources of the law, and detailing how the law struggles to keep up with changing technologies. The relationship between licensing and copyright is especially well covered, as is how copyright law treats formats other than text. For anyone familiar with the previous edition, every chapter includes a note at the beginning that details changes from the first edition. Each chapter includes a case scenario illustrating an aspect of copyright law. Supplemental materials include a glossary of copyright terms, a model policy for library photocopying, relevant statutory law, and the rights and limitations of copyright holders. A few minor typographical errors take little from the quality of the work.\ Assessment: This is a high quality and useful work, and a needed update to the original due to changes in the field in the intervening years. If one book is needed on copyright, this would be the one to purchase; it combines needed guidance on copyright law, technology, and licensing.\ \
