Models can be confusing or can make the work of the organization understandable. The Synergy Model simplifies the work of the organization because it is a patient-centric model based simply on the needs of the patient. (Karlene Kerfoot, RN, PhD, FAAN, Partner, Kerfoot & Associates) The premise of the AACN Synergy Model for Patient Care is simple, elegant, and historically embedded in the practice of nursing nurses have always done what patients needed and were unable to do for themselves. Presents the history and practical application of the model.Chapters focus on use of the model in different ways, including professional advancement, peer review, patient care, research evidence, and undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Includes perspectives of staff nurses, nurse leaders, educators, scientists, peer reviewers, and certification experts. Doody Review Services Reviewer:Jo M. Walrath, RN, MS, PhD(Johns Hopkins University )Description:This book reviews the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Synergy Model for Patient Care and describes the application of this conceptual framework across a variety of practice areas and nurse's roles. Purpose:The book meets its goal of demonstrating the model's flexibility with exemplars. The model focuses on the core essence of nursing, the nurse-patient relationship. Internal and external pressures on today's nurses demand changes to current delivery models of care; this framework provides a means for innovation in practice. Audience:This model and exemplars provide any nurse considered a change agent and who has organizational support, skills, and knowledge an opportunity to implement micro or macro change in their organization. The author has been a consistent leader in the development of the model over the last decade. A distinguished group of contributing authors brings the model to life in their implementation exemplars. Features:The book provides a usable and thorough explanation of the theory that underpins the model. Implementation exemplars discuss how adaptive the model is for macro organizational change, such as implementing peer review, nurse orientation, staff development, and clinical advancement ladders. Exemplars also demonstrate the model's utility in settings outside of critical care, such as ambulatory care and academic settings. Finally, the authors discuss the validation and concept evaluation processes, and the need for empirical support for the model. The simplicity of the model makes the book an easy read. Most nurses can identify with its main tenets: matching patient needs and nurse competencies in order to achieve positive outcomes for patients. Bedside nurses may not find the last three chapters as useful as the exemplars, but they are a necessary read for individuals who want to understand the model in its entirety. While there is repetition between chapters in reiterating the tenets of the model, it does not distract from the book. Like the model, the artwork, print, and presentation parallel the simplicity of the model itself.Assessment:As a nurse engaged in early development of professional practice models, I found this framework easy to understand, readily transferable to a variety of settings, and its use in initiating or enhancing professional practice models in an organization clearly attainable.
