A short, user-friendly introduction to major historical, cultural, spiritual, and theological points of interest in the complex of faith traditions known collectively as Hinduism. Stress in copy that this is an irenic approach to Hinduism. Perfect for World Cultures classes. An academic catalog selection. Library Journal Paulist Press, the well-known Catholic publishing house, has recently begun a series of small handbooks with titles beginning "Responses to 101 Questions" on a religious subject of current interest. Although the series is intended for general readers, the authors are all first-rate scholars. Renard (humanities, St. Louis Univ.), a specialist in comparative spirituality, has also written another handbook in this series, on Islam. These 101 questions on Hinduism are organized by subject in nine chapters, covering history, sacred texts, doctrinal development, philosophy, religious observances, ethics, and spirituality. Like other books in this series, this one sometimes displays a specifically Catholic interest in the selection of questions and in doctrinal comparisons made in several answers. However, readers of other faiths should not be deflected--the book is readable and highly informative. Renard is particularly helpful in explaining Hindu terminology and the complexities of doctrine. Recommended for academic and public libraries.--James F. DeRoche, Alexandria, VA
