Horace Bell was an early and prominent attorney of Los Angeles and a member of the California Rangers, a sort of ad hoc law enforcement group formed to go after local bandits before there was any real organized law and order in L.A. This book has wonderful descriptions and information about life in early Southern California, an area somewhat neglected in most histories (Northern California and the Gold Rush get all the ink). The original 1881 edition of this book was the first book printed in Los Angeles.
