This is an update of a 2006 edition.\ Purpose: The purpose is to keep primary care practitioners current in medicine, particularly with those changes that are truly based on the current literature, and to dispel some unsubstantiated claims made in direct-to-consumer advertising. The editors and contributors present a very worthwhile book, accomplishing the goal.\ Audience: The stated audience is primary care practitioners, but that significantly underestimates the audience. This is an excellent reference for specialists who need to maintain an understanding of other specialties. The editors and contributors are acknowledged leaders in the medical community.\ Features: The chapters are arranged by presenting problems, e.g. headache, tremor, anemia, etc. Each chapter presents a short explanation of the pertinent pathophysiology, differential diagnoses, the important parts of the workup including physical findings and laboratory data, treatment, and considerations of when referral or admission for inpatient care is indicated. The only shortcoming of the book is the relative lack of graphics, particularly in the dermatology section. There are tables and figures that are easy to understand and a very helpful bibliography.\ Assessment: There are numerous books covering primary care medicine and this is a very well laid-out one, but it falls short on graphics. In addition to addressing diagnostic and treatment issues, the editors also discuss topics such as cost-effective care, estimating risks and benefits, and when to refer patients to a specialist. Although the book does not contain a large number of illustrations, there are some charts and tables that help to outline differential diagnoses and treatment plans. The references are up-to-date and include comments summarizing the content of each reference. This feature will save the reader time in searching for additional information.
