Here’s Paddington once more, just returned from a visit to Darkest Peru and his Aunt Lucy’s birthday celebration at the Home for Retired Bears. Now that Paddington is home with the Browns, he’s free to cause his usual kind of trouble: dabbling in the stock market, trying a career as a barber, even taking a turn at the ballet. But the promise of international fame doesn’t turn this bear’s head. Not for long, at least. Indeed, readers will agree, it’s far better to be simply a bear called Paddington.Children's LiteraturePaddington Bear is returning to London after a journey to Darkest Peru to visit his Aunt Lucy. To surprise him, the Brown family, with whom he lives in London, has joined his ship while it is still several days sailing-time away from England. Thus begins a group of several loosely connected stories about this famous bear, a character loved by many children around the world. Some of the seven stories included here are more child-friendly than others. Chapters Three and Four concern Paddington being duped by a shady character who sells him a forged share in the Portobello Oil Company with money he intended to deposit in the bank. Chapter Four, "A Visit to the Stock Exchange," is full of terms unfamiliar to children; such as stocks, stock exchange, bona fides, remanded in custody, dud shares, forgery, the Scarlet Pimpernel, and so forth. In these chapters, the text is difficult to follow. The other stories are a bit easier to understand. They all include some difficult vocabulary words, but the context provides helpful clues for readers. In each short story, Paddington finds himself in a predicament of his own making. By story's end, he manages to redeem himself in an amusing way. 2001 (orig.1966), Houghton Mifflin Company, 0618115773
