Most of the content in the book comes from educational articles written by the author. Purpose: According to the author, this book was written to provide a comprehensive introduction to the subject of ophthalmic dispensing. It is important that all optical professionals maintain a solid and current foundation in ophthalmic lens theory and application. This book meets the author's objectives by covering all of the main areas of ophthalmic lenses. Audience: This book is clearly targeted to optometry and optical students. The author has an academic affiliation and has contributed to the field of ophthalmic lenses and design for many years. Features: All of the primary types of ophthalmic lenses, including myopic, hyperopic, aphakic and multifocal optical lens corrections are included in this book. Particularly well covered is the theory of ophthalmic lenses. It is very technical and thorough in its content. There are many helpful charts and colorful illustrations that clarify the text and provide quick reference. However, the book is too technical in some areas and many of the references are old and antiquated. There is also a problem with the enclosed CD-ROM; some statements that explain diagrams flash across the screen too quickly to read. Assessment: This well-illustrated book is a good resource for beginning optometry students as well as intermediate level dispensing students or working opticians. It is an important contribution to the field of dispensing ophthalmic lenses due to its completeness and ample color illustrations.
