\ From The CriticsReviewer: Diane M Tomasic, EdD, RN(Slippery Rock University )\ Description: This book provides readers with the basics needed to read a research report and to develop a positive attitude toward research.\ Purpose: The purpose is to provide readers with the skills to understand a research report. This is important since many nurses are becoming aware of the key role that research plays in evidence-based practice. Many nurses feel ill-equipped to find, read, and critically evaluate research.\ Audience: The target audience for this book is any nurse seeking a friendly, concise guide to reading research. This is the third edition that the author has written.\ Features: This book analyzes the parts of a research report. It begins with an introduction on how to use the book and why one needs to be able to read and understand a research report. Chapter 3 deals with locating research articles and chapter 4 with how to summarize an article. The remaining chapters deal with each component of a research article: abstract, introduction and literature review, methodology, results, discussion and conclusion, and implications for practice. The book contains icons to direct the reader to the glossary, further reading, or cross-reference. It is a small book (fewer than 100 pages) and there are some omissions. Some components frequently found in research reports that are not mentioned in the book include framework, quasi-experimental research methods, grounded theory research, non-random sampling methods, and ANOVA.\ Assessment: This pocket-sized book should be very useful to the target audience. It does provide the reader with the basics to understand the components of a research report.\ \ \ 2 Stars from Doody\ \
