\ School Library JournalGr 9 Up-This volume opens with a history of the nationwide debate over violent content in television, video games, music, and film, tracing the story from Punch and Judy to Marilyn Manson. The following chapters address the impact of violent media, government intervention, and societal response. Written by professors, senators, psychologists, CEOs, and media watchdogs, the articles provide a truly diverse and divergent set of opinions. Short in length (most have been edited from original pieces) and strong on substance, the essays will appeal to students preparing papers and debate topics. Interesting quotes are highlighted, important points are frequently bulleted, and charts and graphs are included when appropriate. Discussion questions, lists of periodical articles and books, and an excellent index are included. At times some references, such as the Beavis and Butthead controversy of 1993, seem dated. However, the issues of ratings systems, news coverage of violent crimes, and parental advisories are all still very much in the public debate. This topic is close to the heart of teens, and they will find themselves vigorously agreeing and disagreeing with the sundry viewpoints presented. The fine articles and inclusion of well-known authors and incendiary topics should spur students to create well-crafted analyses. Overall, this is a fine addition.-Cass Kvenild, University of Wyoming, Laramie Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.\ \
