European and US scholars of philosophy grapple primarily with ontology in the intensional case, or with important ontological relations. A few however explore some categories of entities based on what the entities mainly focus on. They are not concerned—or at best mildly so—with traditional metaphysical matters such as the nature and existence of God, immaterial substances, or space and time. One of their goals is to identify a close semantic connection among the concepts of being, essence, existence, identity, and persistence.
