Mary Lou Adams This third edition is a well written depiction of the fundamentals of nursing research. The book concisely describes the steps in the research process and numerous examples are given for each step in the process. The first edition of the book was published in 1987. The purpose is to promote interest in research conducted by nurses. The book is intended primarily for individuals with little research experience. Targeted for undergraduate nursing students, the book provides nursing students, both graduate and undergraduate, and nurses in clinical practice with a practical reference for conducting and critiquing nursing research. The overall informal manner in which the book is written makes it user friendly. Both quantitative and qualitative designs are included. Real and simulated case studies are provided to demonstrate effective methodology. At the end of Chapters 3 through 15, a section is devoted to critiquing the specific step of the research process that the chapter addresses. A set of critiquing questions is highlighted in a box for easy access. Each chapter contains end-of-chapter questions and "get involved" exercises to aid in self-assessment. This is a well-written fundamental nursing research text. It is an excellent resource for both undergraduate and graduate nursing students, as well as nurses in clinical practice. It helps students learn about the research process. It aids in the development of the skills necessary to evaluate research findings and motivates the reader to use research findings in practice settings. This is an excellent resource for libraries and bookstores as well as individual nurses. The clear and concise manner in which the material ispresented makes it very user friendly.
