A preface to the Dover edition is provided by Kirsten Aschengreen Piacenti of the Stibbert Museum in Florence, Italy. The book contains 217 b&w illustrations by collector and artist Frederick Stibbert depicting priests, warriers, Roman citizens, French monarchs and Scottish kings, jousting English knights of the 13th century, 15th-century Italian gentlewomen, and many others.
