KATHLEEN KRULL is well known for her innovative, award-winning nonfiction for young readers, which includes the successful Lives of... series. She is a book reviewer and former children's book editor. Kathleen Krull lives in San Diego, CA. www.kathleenkrull.com Coop Renner, Fairmeadows Elementary, Duncanville, TX Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information. - CriticasGr 1-6-The gorgeous paintings would steal the show from a lesser text, but this direct and sympathetic survey of Chavez's life and work holds its own. Krull sets the stage and draws children in with a brief look at Chavez's rural childhood. His early life must have had its difficulties but seems idyllic here. Morales's artwork is almost magical as it depicts family members celebrating a summer evening telling stories and roasting corn, or the children combatting the daytime desert heat with a dip in sparkling water. But the 1930s drought destroyed the ability of Chavez's extended family to support the farm, forcing its members into migrant labor. During these hard years, the boy senses the anti-Mexican bias and suffers in school, seeming destined to fail. But as he grows, young Chavez refuses to give up or forget his childhood, in which hard work wasn't necessarily cruel and debilitating. Krull's text and Morales's artwork combine to create a vivid and impressive introduction to one of the United States' most significant figures. The Spanish translation is first-rate. An outstanding purchase for all children's collections, this title should also do well in bookstores and is even suitable for middle school libraries.
