Doody Review Services Reviewer:Vicki Ann Moss, DNSc, MS, BSN, RN(University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)Description:This overview of nursing theory and theory development informs readers how to apply theory from the work of Nightingale to the theorists of the 21st century.Purpose:The purpose is to provide nursing students with reasoning skills through knowledge of theory and theory development so that they can become competent and caring professionals. Audience:The book was basically written for undergraduate nursing students. Features:Each chapter begins with an overview, key words and concepts, and a chapter outline, and ends with a summary. Learning activities are included for many chapters as well as nursing stories, which highlight the use of theory and reasoning. New to this edition are photos of many theorists and brief overviews of their lives. Two appendixes provide an Internet guide and a criterion-based critique form. A glossary of theory terms is also included. Assessment:This tiny book is packed with information and covers theory and theory development, the theorists, critique, research, and reasoning in a form that undergraduate students can comprehend. The many learning activities, boxes, tables, and summaries are very helpful for comprehension and understanding of the material. The chapter on the theorists is concise and well done, and also includes borrowed theories and overviews of theories from Greece, Japan, Sweden, England, and Scotland. The authors have done an excellent job of putting theory and reasoning into a practical and interactive format.
