Engineering is the application of science and mathematics to achieve useful objectives for the benefit of society. Typically, the goal of an engineering education is to effectively pass on to students knowledge in the application of science and mathematics to solve engineering problems. A number of resources are available for design engineers, but until now, there has never been a single comprehensive resource specific to ceramic applications.

Clark (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State U.) and his co- editors introduce the concepts and principles of engineering design. The 18 other contributed chapters, including problems and b&w illustrations, treat such topics as designing nuclear waste containment, an orthopedic joint, and even a bionic cat, and beyond technical specifications, consider ethical issues in design. Appendices include the National Academy of Engineering's top 20 engineering achievements list, and the National Institute of Ceramic Engineers (NICE) code of ethics. Published in cooperation with NICE, and based on a 2001 workshop held in conjunction with their Annual Conference on Advanced Ceramics and Composites. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
